AUSTRALIA’S Olympic athletes returned home to a hero’s welcome this morning — but they weren’t sending those loving vibes back to poor Today sports presenter Tim Gilbert.
Gilbert was on location at Sydney Airport to greet our Olympians as they disembarked the plane from Rio, snatching interviews with whoever he could amid the cheers and chaos.
To be fair, Gilbo managed to corner many of the sporting heroes for a chat — but one particularly unsuccessful segment made for hilariously awkward live TV.
“There’s Jared Tallent, I might just yell out to Jared. Jared! My dear friend! Jared, can you walk over?” he yelled to the approaching gold medal-winning race walker.
Tallent offered the reporter a little half-wave, half-dismissal and proceeded to talk to another interviewer while Gilbert, deflated, looked on.
Next up: champion swimmer Mack Horton. Surely he’d stop for a chat?
“Mack Horton, big round of applause for Mack Horton! Well done Mack!”
Horton offered a weak “Sorry ...” to Gilbert, putting his hands up to shield his face and sailing straight past the Today microphone.
By now, Gilbert’s cheery demeanour was starting to fade.
“Umm … just brilliant stuff, Karl and Lisa,” he said, not at all convincingly.
Back in the comfort of the studio, host Karl Stefanovic couldn’t help but poke fun at his hapless colleague.
“Do you smell or something this morning? What’s going on bro? Why aren’t they talking to you?”
“I thought Mack and I were close,” is all Gilbert could offer in response.
